1. It Is Safer Than Ear Syringing

More gentle, effective and safer than previous ‘syringing’ low-pressure water at body temperature (37°c) flushes out larger quantities of wax in the ear canal all three methods of ear wax removal are now available at all leightons opticians & hearing care branches. traffic

2. It Is The Quickest Wax Removal Method

Ear irrigation, or sometimes called low pressure irrigation, is a more controlled process than syringing, normally carried out by a trained nurse who can exert control over the water pressure depending on the amount of ear wax and the sensitivity of the patient. However, the process still uses water, which isn't the best solution, due to the possibility that it can remain in the ear and cause an infection. pages This approach also requires olive oil to be poured into the ears for several weeks beforehand – which can be inconvenient and messy. 3. It Is Very Effective

Ear wax syringing preparation– in order to maximize the benefit of ear syringing, we would advise that you buy and use some sodium bicarbonate ear drops or purified olive oil ear drops first. This will help to soften the wax first. Please be aware that sodium bicarbonate is much more effective, but can cause ear canal irritation. We would recommend trying sodium bicarbonate ear drops first, and if it does irritate you, change to olive oil ear drops. Put 2-3 drops into each ear (whilst lying on the oppo site side) and stay like that for at least 5 minutes. Perform this procedure twice per day for at least 5 days before seeing the nurse.

From many years of primary health care experience we know the importance  of removing blocked wax before a flight or dive trip - but of course, we can always help with this if you are not travelling as well. Wax forms naturally in the ear canal, its purpose is to protect the ear by trapping dust and other particles from entering the ear. The wax usually makes its own way to the ear opening where it is washed away but some people seem to produce more wax than others and as we get older ear wax tends to become less moist, meaning it's transfer out of the ear is not as effective.

If excessive wax is an ongoing issue, or you have symptoms that indicate that the ears are blocked, your audiologist may advise you to have your ears professionally cleaned. When you have your ears cleaned by a professional, they will use safe, effective techniques to break down and remove hard wax.

Is ear syringing different?

Harbourside family practice will no longer be able to provide routine ear syringing to our registered patient population except in specific circumstances. Why has this changed? surgery is contracted to provide ear syringing in certain circumstances, for example where requested to do so by secondary care (hospital services such as audiology or ear, nose and throat) or where a gp requests this because they need to make an assessment or a diagnosis. Surgery is not contracted to provide a routine service to patients who experience a build-up of wax. We have tried to accommodate patients as best as we can in the past but in reviewing our capacity and demand we have concluded that it is no longer possible to.

Appointments for ear syringing due to earwax build-up are available with our practice nurses but often this is an issue that can be dealt with at home. If you do need an appointment please use eardrops or drops of almond, olive or baby oil into the affected ear up to 7 days prior to syringing. This will soften the wax and make it easier to remove. As an alternative to making an appointment to see one of our clinicians, you may wish to consider managing the problem yourself at home. More information is available in the lealet below on how to manage the problem yourself.
